Essential Tips to Keep Your Facebook Page Private

How much do you think someone can find out about you online?  Even if I only “kind of” knew you, how much do you think you’d find?  The answer: a whole lot.  Facebook currently has over 500 million active users, each one sharing a little bit (or sometimes a whole lot) of their lives online.  If they aren’t careful, that information can easily fall into the wrong hands.

The Red-Headed Diva, my good friend and social media celebrity (um, Lady Gaga follows HER on Twitter), recently did a little experiment.  She took a few people she only somewhat knew on Facebook, and started researching them with a few simple questions.  The information she found was incredible.  She knew the names of people’s children, where they lived, when they were going on vacation, among lots of other questionable details.  She wrote about the experience on her Facebook fan page, along with this interesting article from Newsweek: 10 Ways Facebook Can Ruin Your Life.  The enormity of what seems like some simple status updates on Facebook can do to your life is incredible.

So what do we do?  Give up Facebook altogether?  I can hear some of you shuddering.  Giving up Facebook does not need to be the answer.  Luckily, Facebook has recently updated their privacy controls to better protect it’s users.  I could go on about how you need to adjust your privacy controls, but the truth of the matter is, the kind folks over at Mashable have written a much more direct and easy to follow article.

While these tips, and the Facebook Privacy Controls, are not foolproof they are an informed start at protecting your information.  Remember, the Internet is forever…next time you think about posting questionable content, think about how your grandmother would feel if she found it.  I guarantee, you won’t post at least 1/3 of the things you intended to post.

5 Reasons You Should Visit My Facebook Fan Page

There are a lot of cool things going on over at my Facebook Fan Page.  As some of you may know, I’ve been adding some new features on the page, and I wanted to take a few minutes to show you some of the things you may have missed.

1. We are having GREAT discussions on the wall on the Fan Page.  I usually try to post a question everyday, often in the afternoon for everyone to talk about.  Sometimes they are questions about digiscrapping, sometimes they are questions that I am researching for other blog posts, and sometimes the questions are just fun ones.
2. You can sign up for the Sir Scrapalot Designs Newsletter directly from the Fan Page.  Over on the left sidebar, if you scroll down, you will find the box to sign up for the newsletter.  You can also sign up for the newsletter on the Welcome tab.
3. You can post your layouts directly on my wall.  I love this!  I love seeing the layouts that people come up with using my products, and posting them on the wall is a great way to show them off.  I encourage everyone to do this, it makes me really happy, LOL.
4. You can quickly see some of my latest products.  By clicking on the Latest Products tab, you can see and find a link to the latest kits and such from Sir Scrapalot designs.  Often, I try to share the full size preview, so if you really want to see what’s going on in the kit, you can do that.
5. I totally give away coupons and special offers to my fans.  I love my fans, and I love being able to show them with exclusive coupon codes and discounts.  I try to offer some sort of discount fairly frequently, so you’ll want to “Like” the page to make sure you don’t miss out.
